The second highlighted setting, objects as obj groups, will retain your groups (otherwise they all get put together into one).
They should definitely be enabled when exporting your mesh. In the image below, I highlighted the two important settings for sims meshes (the image shows the settings that I always use). But if you check “write normals” in the export settings of blender (in the export to obj save dialog window), that should solve your problem (with it, the normals will get exported correctly). The default settings do not export the normals, that’s why your mesh turns black (it gets stripped of all information on how the light hits the mesh, thus the light gets not reflected at all/appears black).
